Jassin also emphasised that the novel discussed issues with Minang adat, which would not be found in a foreign work. The literary documentarian HB Jassin, who compared the two using an Indonesian translation of Sous les Tilleuls entitled Magdalena, wrote that there was very little chance that the novel should be called plagiarism, as Hamka's descriptions of locations were highly detailed and consistent with his earlier works.
I can watch this for 4 -5 times as it was not boring.

I personally ask you to watch this movie because the actor is very good in bringing the character in the movie. Basically, the title and the storyline is not quite match as the story is more about the love compare to the story about the sinking ship.But it acceptable since the story is expected that love between Hayati and Zainuddin might starts burning again but in the end it turn into tragedy as Hayati died in the Kapal Van Der Wijck. This movie i give 9/10 for the rating as it can make you cry suddenly without even realizing. But it ends up, that Hayati is the one who break the promises. For me it contain a lot of lesson such as never give up when you are going heartbreak.As you can see the main character still move forward as his friend advice him because you can't do anything when it happen as it was too late.Secondly, don't too believe in other promises as Hayati has swear to Zainuddin to maintain their relathionship eventhough he is far away. So that are some of the synopsis that I get after watching the movie.At first, it quite hard to understand the plot of the story but after watching it for many times it a very touching story with an epic conflict. Zainuddin and Hayati face their love toughest in a tragedy of Kapal Van der Wijck that sink down. Hayati has begged to Zainuddin to accept her back but it happen on the other way. Hayati has faces a toughest problem in his married life as wife which has bring deathness of his husband Aziz. A battle between marital wealth and beauty marrige with a pure timeless love. In the middle of his fortune and fame, a reality came back to Zainuddin, he meet Hayati in an opera show,but this time with Hayati's husband,Aziz.Zainuddin has succesfully published his own novel based on what he has experienced on the past.To make everyone surprise Zainuddin became a famous writer which leading to luxury life. Hayati finally accepts as the family forced her. Upon this rejecetion, Zainuddin decided to migrate and open a new chapter in his life with his bestfriend,Muluk to forget the grief of his lost for love but fate had another plan.Fortunately,there is Muluk who gives support to him and ask Zainuddin to go to Java and become a writer. The conflict began deeper as Hayati is proposed by a wealthy man with pure Minang descent. Zainuddin has to let Hayati go as eveyone in Minangkabau oppose their relationship.As the result of Zainuddin love to Hayati is considered to be a disgrace in Hayati family eyes because of low status social and come from poor family with no clear cultural background.Zainuddin is considered as an outcast as his family doest not come from Minangkabau. Padang town is famous with high importance of traditions and customs at that time which bring bad thing to Zainuddin that was not very well received by the resident of the village as he is not considered to be indigenous.Upon Zainuddin arrival in Padang he met Hayati, the daughter of Minang reputable family in the town and immediately in first sight they both fell in love. This story is about Zainuddin, a Minang-Mengkasar descent boy that raised by his aunt has decided to leave town to Padang after the death of his parent in order to fulfill his late father late massage about his homeland.
